Why do the buttons click on Key Safes?

On mechanical key safes, the clicking of the buttons confirms that the number has been entered and registered. Once you’ve pressed the button once, it will not click again until the mechanism has been reset (you can do this by pulling down the ‘CLEAR’ button’).
